Sony started under the name Tokyo Tsushin Kogyo (Tokyo Telecommunications Engineering Company) founded in 1946 by Masaru Ibuka and Akio Morita. They made their living by repairing radios and manufacturing voltmeters with an eye to develop a future in the design and manufacturing of new electronic products. Their first product was an automatic rice cooker, which enjoyed limited success overall, however it was the first product in an expansive line of innovations, which continues today.

The two men were global thinkers who realised the importance of a brand that crossed cultural and language borders in order to expand the business in the USA and Europe. The business title of TTK was already in use by another company so the new name of Sony was conceived. The name derives from the Latin word sonus meaning sound and the English word sonny-boy – a term used by the Americans to denote a bright youngster.
The first product released under the Sony brand was the TR-55 transistor radio, which went on sale in 1955. This was followed by Sony’s world first “pocketable” transistor radio. Sony’s UK history began in 1968 when Sony United Kingdom was founded in London. They were the first major Japanese company to open a factory in the UK. Currently there are two factories based in Wales at Bridgend and Pencoed, which between them manufacture broadcast cameras, television sets and components for the UK and other countries around the world. The company has been awarded the Queens Award for Export on four occasions in the 80s and 90s.

Sony currently manufacture a wide range of products including Sony Televisions and projectors, Sony digital photography products, Sony camcorders, Sony DVD players and DVD recorders, Sony home cinema systems, Sony audio products and MP3 Walkman players and the VAIO computing range. In addition, Sony manufactures a range of recordable media and memory products and accessories.

Sony is one of the best-known brands for televisions in the world today and lead in the design and implementation of the latest advances in the market. Sony’s current range of televisions is broken into four main categories these are LCD (Liquid Crystal Display), Plasma TV, Rear Projection TV and Projectors.
